Frida on my mind...

Researching for my upcoming Frida exhibition has led me to many intriguing photos of the iconic Frida Kahlo. Earlier this month I was so taken by a black & white photo of her that I felt compelled to sketch it (as seen in earlier post). The image is extraordinary, her connection with the audience is insane...it was as if there was no camera between herself & the photographer at all but that some sort of magic managed to capture her staring straight into your own eyes. She stands with a woven shawl over her shoulders, her hair slicked back.... she looks at you with both an incredible strength and a fragility...it literally brought tears to my eyes. My unfinished sketch in no way does it justice but it felt good to try.

This current illustration is one of my favourites. I love that she is in her own space with no eye contact with the viewer. I've adorned her hair with flowers, butterflies & a skull. Its an exciting work in progress with some colour to come.
